Hungarian Wines: Where To Get Them

As a follow up to previous week’s segment about the wines of Hungary, we thought it would be prudent to give a list of bars to drink wine in Budapest. This is just some of the many, many places where good wine is served in good manner. Wine is a tradition amongst all classes in Hungary, much like in France, and where you go and choose to drink it will definitely affect your experience. Take a little time and browse some of our (by no means complete list of) recommendations.

Andante

Called the Wine Apothecary, this place has an extensive by the glass choice. It is the perfect venue to sit down and have a glass of something refreshing, and their wine list has all of the typical, and a good chunk of the not so typical upper scale Hungarian wines. Good place to go after lunch, for a quick glass and a chance to catch your breath.

Apropo Wine Bar

This place is the height of hype: they serve tapas, have wines that are currently trending, are located on Király street in the heart of the 7th district, and have both by the bottle and by the glass, although the latter selection is somewhat skimpier. Perhaps the cool futuristic and minimal design of this bar is what sets it apart from the rest, and its amazing location.

Dobló

Fine dining, a great bar and Budapest hipster culture all packed into one amazing place. The Dobló is located on Dob street, a bit seedier end of the inner city, but well favoured by expats and tourists alike. A solid selection, interesting foods and a ruin bar atmosphere awaits those who would like a taste of Budapest.

This bar is a gourmand’s delight. Everything that is good in gastronomy finds its way here; excellent selection of Hungarian wines and champagnes, Hungarian cheeses and small appetizers to go with the delicious and tantalizing drinks, and a two story area with plenty of space. This is one of the newer bars but it is getting lots of attention, and quickly becoming a Budapest staple.

Palack

This place is all about, and only about wine. Hardly a bar at all, with only snacks being served (but my, are they delicious), this place is a really good, relaxed establishment where you can really delve deep into the world of Hungarian wines. Located on the Buda side, this is roughly what a library of wine would look like.
