If you travel abroad for dental treatments, you may find yourself in the situation of having to stay more than you thought. Healing times can drag on, unforeseen emergencies and delays may occur, despite the best efforts of the clinical staff to control the situation, as medical procedures are such that they cannot be predicted with 100% accuracy, and sadly, dental procedures are no different in this regard.

In recent news, it has come to my attention that many people try to seek dental treatment abroad because of a hope for laxer regulations. This is an incredibly disturbing piece of news, and for a good number of reasons. Besides being extremely irresponsible, it also can put the dentist who you are seeing in jeopardy of losing their praxis. Let’s see how and why, by using the most common reason to travel abroad, the use of dental implants as the lens of our vision.

In the previous installment of this series, I talked about the structural makeup of dental implants, and how they are different from each other. With the internet being full of advertising tricks and misleading marketing campaigns, it is sometimes difficult to know which dental implant is the best one to go with. This is why I have talked about the different surfaces, diameters and materials that dental implants can have/be made of in the previous article. In this one, I intend to continue speaking of certain key structural points that differentiate dental implants from each other.

There are several medical procedures that attract Western European patients to countries of less income. The cost of certain medical procedures is just so high in certain countries that it makes it more worth it for patients to travel abroad than to get the procedure done at home. While this is a sad fact of industrial capitalism, it does open up other markets, and other avenues for patients who are in need of medical treatment, but cannot afford it in their own country.

Orthodontic treatment requires a visit to your orthodontist every six weeks or so, for an activation session, where the brace or device used to cure your malocclusion will be tightened. Of course, as with all other forms of dentistry, the price of orthodontics is much cheaper abroad than it is in the UK. The question is, is it worth getting the devices abroad? Let’s take a look, shall we?
